Awassa Youth Campus Outreach Programs provide performances, workshops and various events for youth in Ethiopia. In addition to raising HIV/AIDS awareness and complimenting the education provided in schools Outreach Programs are also designed to broaden the scope of Awassa Youth Campus . Awassa Youth Campus Outreach Programs provide an opportunity for youth to actively and creatively participate in their community. In 2007, Outreach Programs include One Love HIV/AIDS Awareness Theater, Children’s Workshops and Youth Events.
- One Love HIV/AIDS Awareness Theater is the most notable AYC Outreach Program and provides HIV/AIDS awareness messages for tens of thousands of people throughout Ethiopia each year! (read more).
- Children’s Workshops are held throughout the year in Awassa and seek to provide an educational and entertaining outlet for children in the community. Incorporating reading, gymnastics, art, music and educational games Children’s Workshops are facilitated by youth volunteers and take place in public places, community organizations, and schools. Workshops are provided for children aged 7-15. Children’s Workshops are based on the principle that excess, idle time, spent on the streets in conjunction with a lack of creative outlets could prove detrimental, ultimately, paving the way for dangerous behaviors.
- Youth Events include contests, exhibitions, sporting events and community-wide recreational opportunities for youth. In 2007, the Awassa Youth Campus will sponsor basketball, ping-pong and football tournaments. Additionally, there will be 3 “Youth Days” during the year, these are free, community events that include activities performances all designed to raise awareness and promote creativity amongst youth. In 2006, AYC organized a youth art contest/exhibition, the topic was a “youth perspective on HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia”, we received over 40 original submissions (click here to see artwork). AYC will sponsor another art contest/exhibition as well as a poetry and photo competitions in 2007. Finally, In September, 2007 Ethiopia, and Africa, will celebrate the new millennium. AYC is planning to organize and support the “first youth festival of the millennium” and we hope to attract upwards of 5,000 youth and visitors from across the globe.
