Aiding Children | Fighting AIDS

The Awassa Children’s Center provides housing, education, career training, healthcare and support to approximately 60 children, most of whom have been orphaned by the AIDS epidemic.

Here are some of the highlights of the Awassa Children’s Center 2006 accomplishments:

* Children's Education. Increased success resulting from our educational enhancement programs (e.g., summer camp and after-school tutoring). Currently over 20% of the children are ranked in the top three academic positions in their respective classes.

* Career Education. The Awassa Children’s Center completed construction of a modern vocational training center, which includes a computer lab and additional formal educational programs.

* Health Care. Implemented an aggressive health care management program for the children. For the first time in the Center’s history, not a single child contracted malaria, despite a particularly difficult season this year.

* Environment. Hosted an environmental atelier with the Gund Institute of the University of Vermont. In addition, the Awassa Children’s Center planted over 4,000 eucalyptus and acacia trees on nearly 50,000 square feet of land around the Center.
